The race didn't start out on the right pedal for the Winnipeg Police. Down 1 rider (from 4 to 3) due to family circumstances, one of their team members was already sick at the start line. Having 3 riders took its toll. Taking 1-hour shifts, they struggled due to lack of sleep and inadequate recovery time. Without a doubt, this was a tough journey.
At the same time, the team was able to maintain good spirits when we met with them in Calgary. "At least we got to bike the mountains," Darrell Hees commented. Things got even more difficult as Darrell and Bill both struggled with illness; injuries and setbacks plagued all 3. The distance to Winnipeg was still possible, but the damage it would inflict on their bodies was too much to risk.
Unable to continue, the police have withdrawn. None of them are satisfied. "The heart wants to continue," Darrell commented, but it was obvious that the toll it was taking was too much. The team has come to learn that ultra-marathon is a gruelling experience. We hope that in the coming days, as they look back, they can be at peace with their decision.
We wish you all the best as you drive back to Winnipeg and recover. God bless!

The Gogos are so sad to hear about this. If you see us on route home, please stop for a minute and say hi. Jo had a special treat planned for you in Medicine Hat so we're sorry that you missed it. Know that you must be disappointed as this would have been a big investment for your team and your families. We trust that your friends and family will rally around you and especially around the Children's Wish Foundation.
